A week ago, I was really excited that I was able to bike on Saturday. I even thought that I could have started biking a couple of weeks before that. But I was wrong, it snowed on and off all last week and it will continue this week. That is spring for you: crazy weather.
Since about a year ago, I noticed that the headset of my bike (Specialized FSR xc Pro 2007) was a little loose. So I took it apart, cleaned it, and adjusted it. I found some great instructions on how to make the adjustment in Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headset_(bicycle_part)#Threadless_headsets .
I always thought the cap bolt was there just for looks: to hold the cap that covers the ugly tube’s hole. But it actually plays a critical role when tightening your headset: it is the one that controls how tight you want everything to be before you tighten the stem bolts (the stem is the one that holds the steering bar) .

I then applied new grease to the ball bearings and cups and assembled it (note that the BBs on the third pic have no grease, I noticed this as I took the pic and added some):
I went biking on Saturday to the trails near home and I realized that the trails have been ready for quite a while. I could have started biking on them about 3 weeks ago!
The weather was perfect and the trails were mostly dry. I still found some mud spots, mostly because there are snow patches that are melting. But I think it’s safe to say that the lower altitude trails are ready.
Sadly, it will be raining most of next week so I might not be able to go but after that, I’ll be biking.
I tried my new bike shoes and pedals, they worked great. I have the pedals on the loosest setting, allowing the shoes to unclip easily. I did not fall once because of failure to unclip. I like how I can now use more muscles to pedal. Instead of only pedaling down, I now pedal from front to back and down and up. I tried also pedaling from back to front but it feels like that puts too much pressure on my knees and I don’t like that.
Since I did a trail that I had done many times, I noticed that my endurance sucks right now. It will take about a month to get back to where I was last year I think.
I suddenly realized that my life after work has gotten a lot better and it is not just because I’m only working (not studying since I got my MBA); I’m also not teaching.
In case you did not know, I’m no longer teaching any courses at http://neumont.edu, I’m now only their software developer. Even though I’m always very busy, I almost never do any work when I’m at home.
Teaching felt al lot like when you’re a student. You can always be doing something to make your course delivery better. Just like students can always be making their assignments better or studying more to get a better grade. ALWAYS, you could ALWAYS be doing something. Just knowing that I could be doing something for my class sometimes did not let me fully enjoy the other things I was doing.
Well, but there are things I do miss about teaching… You learn a lot when you do class prep; even though I still read and use new technologies, I’m not learning as much as when I taught. And I miss helping students; I really cared about the people in my classroom and it felt good when you looked back at all the stuff you helped them learn.
This past weekend my cousin Domenica, her husband Gustavo, and some of their friends came to Utah to ski. Domenica and Gustavo live in Houston.

As you can see in the pics, the weather was perfect for us beginners. It was above freezing, maybe 40F, and the sky was clear. It was a beautiful day to be skiing.
And I say it was perfect for the beginners because hard core skiers like “powder” snow to ski on. Powder snow is when you have at least a feet of new snow, so it feels like you’re skiing on a soft cloud. But it is a little harder to control your skis and if you fall down, it is a pain in the but to get back on the skis.
I watched my first old school western movie last night: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
And I was very impressed. The movie was created in 1966, man that is old. But it was awesome. The storyline was really easy to follow, sometimes I felt it was too simple, but that actually gave you more time to absorb the details of the characters. You get to know the Blondie (Clint Eastwood) and Tuco so well that you bet you know how they will react… but then the movie still surprises you and you still think,, “Yeah, that is soooo Tuco…”.
I’ll definitely watch some more westerns I hope I find more as good as this one.
Last week (Tuesday I believe) when playing racquetball I took a dive to reach for the ball. As I was hitting it with the racket on my right hand, I was supporting my body with the left arm, but I was heading to the wall at a 45 degree angle. I was going to hit the wall with my left shoulder and face. So I stopped myself with the left arm. Since my legs were still carrying momentum, they made my body rotate sending my legs to the right and twisting my left shoulder until it made a “crunch” sound.
After 20 seconds of intense pain it started feeling almost entirely normal. After 20 minutes there was no pain at all. But since the next day until today I’ve had mild pain and I cannot put my arm in certain positions. I don’t feel like it’s healing at all!
I do have to say the game was fun. I felt I was playing at my 100%. My dive was very close to being successful but I still missed and that was the definitive point that made me lose the game. The game was somewhat tight, making it a lot of fun.
